Sports Scene: July 8-14

The U.S. women defeated Canada, 5-2, to take home the gold medal at the 2014 World Cup of Softball IX in Irvine, California. Team USA finished the tournament with a .361 batting average.


Team USA boxers won five medals in Subotica, Serbia at the 2014 Golden Glove of Vovjodina. Bantamweight Hector Tanajara led Team USA with a gold-medal finish in the international tournament with three wins in Serbia.


The U.S. men’s quad team claimed the bronze medal in 5:54.73 at the 2014 World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland.


Michael Phelps recorded the world’s third-fastest time to win the men’s 100-meter butterfly in 51.67 at the 2014 Bulldog Grand Slam in Athens, Georgia. Five-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte returned to action following a knee injury.

Track & Field

With a time of 9:11.42, Emma Coburn shattered the American record to clinch the 3,000-meter steeplechase title at the IAAF Diamond League Grand Prix in Glasgow, Scotland. Ashton Eaton notched a personal best finishing second in the 400 hurdles, followed by Michael Tinsley in third. Americans won in shot put (Reese Hoffa), long jump (Tianna Bartoletta) and the women’s 400 (Francena McCorory). McCorory clocked in at 49.93 seconds, ahead of Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross, who finished in 50.39. Allyson Felix was second in the 200 (22.35).


Gwen Jorgensen captured her seventh ITU World Triathlon Series title – and fourth consecutive – with a time of 56:54 at the ITU World Triathlon in Hamburg, Germany. The United States also placed fifth at the ITU Mixed Relay World Championships.

Meanwhile, five American women earned top-10 finishes at the PATCO Triathlon Pan American Cup in Toronto, highlighted by Johanna Gartman’s second-place finish in 2:04:58.


The U.S. Olympic duo of Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser defeated Brazil in two sets and took home the gold medal at the FIVB Grand Slam in Gstaad, Switzerland, while Nick Lucena and Ryan Doherty collected the bronze medal.

Water Polo

The United States and Mexico faced off on the sixth day of the UANA Junior Pan American Championships. Team USA won the matchup, 15-6, with the help of Bennett Williams and Thomas Dunstan who both had three goals.
