Service members throughout San Diego were honored at the second annual Salute to Service Festival on Sunday, Oct. 28. Hundreds of guests attended the event hosted by NBC San Diego on the historic USS Midway Museum’s flight deck.
Over a dozen athletes from the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center (CVOTC) came out to the flight deck to meet and take photos with service members and their families. After receiving instruction from some of the resident archery athletes, kids and adults were able to try their hand at archery thanks to the Roadrunner Archery Club (the development program operated on the CVOTC facility) with San Diego Bay as the backdrop behind the targets.
The athletes jumped up on stage between the live music sets to say thanks to our military personnel in attendance. Athletes in attendance were Olympian Alice Schmidt, Paralympians Blake Leeper and David Brown and resident athletes Reindell Cole (track & field), Holly Stover, Geovanna Soler, Ariel Gibilaro and Mackenzie Brown (archery), and Shalom Suniula and Carlin Isles (rugby). Members of the Paralympic Soccer Team had just arrived in San Diego for their weeklong training camp at the CVOTC and came straight to the Midway from the airport to show their support for the troops.
