ESPOO, Finland -- Former U.S. figure skating champion Johnny Weir returns to competition this weekend at the Finlandia Trophy.
Weir, a three-time winner at nationals (2004-06), has not competed since finishing sixth in the 2010 Olympics at Vancouver. He also was fifth at the 2006 Games at Turin, Italy.
Weir has said he is coming back because he wants to skate in the Sochi Olympics in two years. He plans to skate in two Grand Prix series events this season.
Also competing in the Finlandia Trophy are 2011 U.S. silver medalist Richard Dornbush, and in the women's event, 2010 U.S. Olympian Mirai Nagasu.
Russia's Evgeni Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic champion and silver medalist in Vancouver, also begins his season this weekend at the Japan Open in Saitama. Plushenko has not competed since winning his seventh European crown in January.
He goes against two-time world champion Patrick Chan of Canada and 2010 world champ and Olympic bronze medalist Daisuke Takahashi of Japan.
Reigning U.S. champion Ashley Wagner and national bronze medalist Agnes Zawadzki are American entrants in the event.
