Shawn Machel Johnson was born in Des Moines, Iowa.
Began participating in gymnastics.
At 6-years-old, becomes a student of Chow and Li of Chow's Gymnastics and Dance in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Wins the all around titles at the Pan-American Championship in Gatineau, Quebec, the Visa U.S. National Championships in St. Paul, Minn., and at the Tyson American Cup in Jacksonville, Fla.
Claims three gold medals at the World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany including the all around title.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Pan-American Games, walks away with four gold medals and silver in the floor exercise.
At the Visa U.S. National Gymnastics Championships in San Jose, Calif., takes home three golds and one bronze medal, again capturing the all around title.
At the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, qualifies to be nominated to her first Olympic Team in Beijing, finishing first in the all around.
Winning four medals at the Beijing Olympic Games, takes home gold on the balance beam and three silver medals in the floor exercise, team competition, and the all around.
Decides to enjoy her Olympic glory in the Hollywood limelight, making celebrity appearances and attending numerous awards banquets.
Puts on her dancing shoes and wins another title, this time on the TV show “Dancing With the Stars.”
Unfortunately in January of 2010, the golden girl tears her ACL while skiing and has to have reconstructive knee surgery the following month. Her announcement for a comeback in gymnastics came in May of 2010, stating her goal of becoming a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team in London.
In Guadalajara, Mexico, once again medals big at the Pan-American Games, winning a silver on the uneven bars and gold with the team.
On June 3, ends her attempts at making a second Olympic team because of a lingering knee injury, according to the Associated Press.
