The U.S. Women's preliminary Olympic Games roster has eight Olympians that has accumulated a combined 15 Olympic Games appearances. At age 35, middle blocker Danielle Scott-Arruda (Baton Rouge, La.) is attempting to become only the second women's indoor volleyball player to participate in four Olympic Games (Tara Cross-Battle accomplished the feat after the 2004 Olympic Games).
Among players attempting to make a third Olympic Games roster for the U.S. Women's National Team are outside hitter Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah), middle blocker Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, Calif.), setter Robyn Ah Mow-Santos (Honolulu) and libero Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas). Other Olympic veterans who competed at the 2004 Athens Games are opposite/outside hitter Tayyiba Haneef-Park (Laguna Hills, Calif.), outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani (Bloomington, Ill.) and setter Lindsey Berg (Honolulu, Hawai'i).
Individuals on the preliminary roster looking to make their first Olympic Games roster are middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo (Plantation, Fla.), outside hitter Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.), opposite Cassie Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.), libero Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.), outside hitter Kim Glass (Lancaster, Pa.), opposite Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), middle blocker Jennifer Joines (Milpitas, Calif.), setter Angie McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.), outside hitter Kristin Richards (Orem, Utah) and outside hitter Kim Willoughby (Napoleonville, La.).
The U.S. Women's National Team staff for the 2008 Olympic Games include head coach "Jenny" Lang Ping, who will return to her hometown of Beijing. A rarity in the international volleyball coaching circles, she is the only female head coach among the top 20 countries listed in the FIVB World Ranking. According to FIVB files, Lang Ping will be moving into the company of former Hungary women's team coach Gabriella Kotsis as female coaches to lead teams into multiple Olympics. Kotsis led Hungary during the golden era of Hungarian Volleyball, leading the country into three Olympic Games (1972, 1976, 1980).
Lang Ping has Olympic medal experience as both a player and coach while competing in the United States. During the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, she led her squad to the gold medal over Team USA in the championship match. As head coach of the 1996 Chinese Olympic team that competed in Atlanta, Lang Ping guided China to a silver medal.
Assisting Lang Ping in coaching duties will be assistant coach Sue Woodstra, trainer Yong Li, technical consultant Tom Hogan and technical coordinator Diane French. Joan Powell will serve as the team manager for the 2008 Olympic Games. Dr. Chris Koutures has been selected as the team doctor, while Emery Hill, Jr., is listed as the medical support providing athletic trainer duties.
The U.S. Women's National Team is currently competing in the FIVB World Grand Prix. Team USA finished the first preliminary round weekend with a 2-1 record and is in fifth place based on the points won ratio tiebreaker. The Americans are currently in Poland for weekend matches versus Thailand on June 27, Dominican Republic on June 28 and Poland on June 29. The team concludes the preliminary round at Chinese Taipei with contests versus Poland on July 4, Turkey on July 5 and Italy on July 6. The FIVB World Grand Prix Finals, which takes the top five teams plus host Japan, is scheduled for July 8-13 at Yokohoma, Japan.
Lang Ping and the coaching staff is using this tournament, along with other tournaments and exhibition matches held this year, as a tool to evaluate players Olympic Games roster spots.
