The U.S. will have crews competing in the men's adaptive single sculls, women's adaptive single sculls, trunk-arms double sculls and legs-trunk-arms four with coxswain. The nine-person roster includes seven veterans of the adaptive national team and one athlete with Paralympic experience. Women's single sculler Laura Schwanger is a three-time Paralympic track and field athlete, winning four gold medals in 1988, three silver medals and a bronze medal in 1992 and three silver medals in 1996.
Angela Madsen and Scott Brown have won four gold medals at the world championships in the trunk-arms double sculls, while men's single sculler Ron Harvey is a three-time world championships medalist. The leg-trunk-arms four with coxswain crew includes three national team veterans and two rookies.
Rowing at the 2008 Paralympic Games runs September 9-11, with finals set for September 11. Racing will be contested over a 1,000-meter course and will take place at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park, located in the Mapo Town in the Shunyi district of Beijing. The rowing course in located about 45 kilometers outside of downtown Beijing.
This marks the first year that rowing will be a part of the Paralympic Games. The International Rowing Federation (FISA) introduced adaptive rowing on a world championship level at its 2002 World Rowing Championships in Seville, Spain.
