Bush saddened by attack on US family
BEIJING (AP) U.S. President George W. Bush says he and his wife Laura are saddened by a deadly attack on an American family and their Chinese tour guide in Beijing.
Bush says their thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. He added that the U.S. government has offered to provide any assistance the family needs.
A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site Saturday, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics. The man then committed suicide.
The brutal attack was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has tightened security even more for the Olympics.
