LOS ANGELES (AP) Two American protesters who were deported from China before the start of the Olympics are on their way back to the United States, possibly Los Angeles.
State Department spokesman Gordon Duguid said Thursday that two U.S. citizens detained in Beijing after they hung banners protesting human rights abuses in China were deported Wednesday night.
The wife of one of the protesters says the State Department told her it appears Chinese authorities put the Americans on a flight to Los Angeles. Katie Mahoney, the wife of the Rev. Patrick Mahoney, says her husband was among three Americans who hung banners in Tiananmen Square before being taken away by security agents.
