U.S. tennis player Maria Sharapova, 21, will miss the Olympic Games this year due to an injured right shoulder.

On July 30, Sharapova had to withdraw from the Rogers Open in Montreal after her second-round victory due to a painful right shoulder.

The next day on her Web site, Sharapova told her fans, "I wanted to let all of you know first that there's no chance of me competing in Beijing. The timing is so unfortunate and this makes me more sad than anything."

Tennis will begin its tournament at the Olympic Games on August 11.
