Sports Performance Certification:
This is USA Weightlifting’s entry level course and is open to anyone 17 years of age or older.

The Scope and Sequence of this course includes the teaching progressions of the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and all associated movements. Participants will gain knowledge and experience of programming of training for both competitive weightlifters and for athletes using the weightlifting movements for strength and power development as it applies their chosen sport. The course includes theoretical classroom, and practical hands-on portions. Course duration is over one weekend and lasts approximately 13-14 hours divided between lecture and practical training. This course is applicable for Strength & Conditioning /Sports Performance, Health & Fitness and beginning level competitive Weightlifting Coaches. 

Upon successful completion of USAW's Sport Performance Certification, coaches may purchase a Level 1 Sport Performance Polo here.

Advanced Sports Performance Coach Certification:
(Must Be Current Sports Performance or Club Coach to Register)
The Advanced Sports Performance Coach Course is the second course in the Coaching Education Program.
This course is applicable for those coaches seeking advanced knowledge to better themselves and their athletes. It is a requirement for weightlifting coaches seeking to attain the National Coach Rating.
All individuals who successfully complete the course requirements will receive the USA Weightlifting Advanced Sports Performance Coach Certificate. Advanced Sports Performance Coaches that successfully complete the background check and Athlete Performance requirements will receive the USA Weightlifting National Coach Rating.
The scope and sequence of this course is to provide formal instruction in the areas of:
  • Advanced Strength and Power Principles
  • Advanced Biomechanical Principles of Weightlifting
  • Advanced Program Design Application
  • Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology as it relates to Weightlifting
  • Application of Long Term Athletic Development for Weightlifters
  • Coaching Principles
  • National and International Competition Preparation
  • Nutrition; Daily Regime and Phases
  • Skill Acquisition of Athletes
  • Sports Psychology for Weightlifting

Specialty Courses

Program Design:
This one day, 8 hour course covers the parameters of designing safe, effective and progressive programs for both competitive weightlifters and sports performance athletes.

Areas to be included are:
  • Fundamentals of Program Design
  • Philosophy and Expected Outcomes of Program Goals
  • The Role of Periodization in improving athlete performance
  • The concept of Long Term Athletic Development and its influence on training
  • The Supercompensation model approach to programming
  • The Rationale behind exercise selection
  • Sharing of Training Models
  • Creating, editing and monitoring training programs (practical time with Spreadsheets)

USA Weightlifting is the official governing body of Olympic Weightlifting in the United States and the provider of coaching education for the sport of weightlifting under the United States Olympic Committee. Courses and certifications provided by third party vendors/organizations are non-transferable, towards a USA Weightlifting certification.  The sport and science of weightlifting is constantly changing and progressing with new discoveries happening frequently.  For this reason there are no previous courses that are transferable or "grand-fathered" in to obtaining a USA Weightlifting Certification.  The information presented in our courses is up to date and therefore it is in the best interest of our sport to ensure that coaches are properly training and educated. Individuals seeking certification through USA Weightlifting must complete the courses and requirements set forth by the organization.
