Steve Thompson is a trial lawyer and partner at Ungaretti & Harris LLP in Chicago and has been representing Olympians in Olympic selection disputes since the late 1990’s. In his most celebrated case, Mr. Thompson served as lead counsel for U.S. Olympic wrestler Matt Lindland in the case of Lindland v. USOC and USA Wrestling, a case that went through two Olympic arbitrations, three federal court appeals, a petition to the US Supreme Court, and proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport; despite long odds, Mr. Lindland was named to the U.S. Team, competed at the Sydney Games and won a silver medal.
Mr. Thompson has successfully represented one or more athletes in Olympic or Paralympic selection disputes in virtually every Games since 2000, and remains available as a resource to athletes. He also has experience with cases before the US Anti-Doping Agency and other drug policy enforcement authorities. His firm, Ungaretti & Harris LLP, a 100-lawyer firm in Chicago, has the ability to move quickly as Olympic disputes require, and the flexibility to work with athletes and sponsors to design a fee structure and payment arrangements that work for all. Mr. Thompson and his team are familiar with USOC and NGB rules and with the members of the AAA Olympic arbitration panel who hear Olympic disputes, and are available to represent athletes wherever a dispute may be heard.
