JULY 25, 2012
Hey everyone! Some exciting things have been happening as we get closer to the Games. We arrived to the village on July 23 and what an exciting event that always is. I am just so relieved and excited to be here all at the same time. I say I am relieved because we have been training for four long years and now it is time to do some important business. I am not going to lie this was for sure the hardest trip I have ever had to pack for. It is the dream of a water polo player to reach the highest point in a water polo career, which is attending the Olympic Games. This is my second one, however this whole process is just ‘different.’ I was so concerned about being comfortable and having the things to allow myself to feel comfortable at the Olympics. I believe my bag was double the weight it should have been but I think they made an exception. It is kind of a good excuse, right?
This is not only a special Olympics because of Team USA but for my two teammates: Brenda Villa and Heather Petri. These two very special women will be attending their fourth Olympic Games. For those of you who do not know, women’s water polo has only been in the Olympics since 2000. There is only one other female in the women’s water polo world who will also perform in her fourth Olympic games; Sofia Konukh from Russia. They are the elite of the elite in our sport. Brenda and Petie are also in another league of their own; they hold three Olympic medals. In 2000, they earned a silver, in 2004 they earned a bronze, and in 2008 they earned a silver. Brenda and Petie along with USA Water Polo have one remaining medal to fully complete the colors of Olympic medals. These women are the pioneers of our sport and I have looked up to each one of them tremendously. Brenda and Petie perfectly exemplify the Olympic ideals and are fighting warriors while doing so. We are excited for the journey in front of us and, together, all 18 of us (staff and coaches included) are ready to take on anything!
I will do the best I can to blog throughout our experiences. Please follow our incredible journey! Thanks everyone!!!
