Steven Toyoji graduated from Redmond High School in 2004, where he competed in wheelchair basketball and track and field all four years. Toyoji continued competing in track at the University of Arizona, graduating in 2009 with a degree in Business Administration. In 2015, he received his MA in Child and Adolescent Development from San Jose State University 

When not training or competing, Toyoji enjoys traveling, playing wheelchair rugby, fishing, reading, and watching Seattle Seahawks football.
