Slater Storey never expected to become a guide for visually impaired skiers. Slater, older brother to U.S. adaptive alpine skier Elista Storey, was volunteering as a crew member for a disabled race at Solider Mountain when Mark Bathum needed a guide for his first race as a visually impaired skier. Slater volunteered and became his full time guide. The team has been training in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Slater coming from a family of elite skiers was once an able-bodied racer but finds being a guide to be more interesting.  The pair both wear radio helmets so Slater can talk Bathum through the gates and warn him about bumps and dips on the path.

At the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Storey guided Bathum to a silver medal in the downhill.
