His brother Mitchell  was named the Male Swimmer of the year for the 2009 season and his sister Elyse is also a varsity athlete in the sports of cross country and track & field. Snyder began his professional career as an Ensign in the US Navy after graduating from the US Naval Academy with a degree in Naval Architecture. He returned to the pool during rehabilitation where he was able to earn a spot on the US Paralympic National Team and ticket to London in 2012. In the Spring of 2013, Snyder medically retired from the US Navy and spends time as a motivational speaker.
