Lifting weights has always been a major part of Jacob Schrom’s life. But with his recent gold medal at the 2015 IPC Open Americas Championships, he’s proven the sport is way more than just a hobby for him. After just missing a slot on the U.S. team that competed at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Schrom has his sights set on Rio 2016. Schrom learned about Paralympic powerlifting while attending Penn State University, through an organization called Ability Athletics, which supports and funds student athletes with physical disabilities. One day while working for his family landscaping company, the brakes failed on the truck that he was driving and he was thrown out of the window. Consequently, the truck rolled over twice and then landed on his legs. As a result, his right leg had to be amputated above the knee, but he has not let that slow him down. Schrom graduated from Penn State with a degree in landscape contracting and design. An avid outdoors enthusiast, he also enjoys skiing, golfing and hunting.
