Personal:
Clark Rachfal doesn’t have a typical arrangement with his sighted pilot. The two train for the same goals while living more than 2,000 miles apart, but the long-distance training arrangement hasn’t stopped Rachfal and pilot Dave Swanson from being the top tandem cyclists in the nation.

Rachfal’s journey to the U.S. Paralympic team actually started in Australia in 2004 where Rachfal was in a study abroad program when a friend encouraged him to ride a tandem on a 270-kilometer, three-day fundraising ride. Rachfal returned for the ride the following year, and when he returned to the U.S. he signed up for a tandem racing development camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

It was at that first tandem camp that Rachfal and Swanson first met. Within two years they were winning national titles, and within three years they won their first world title.
