Personal: A former highly ranked 66kg player for most of his career, O'Neil made the decision to move down to 60kg during the summer of 2007 with less than a year to go until the 2008 Olympic Games. O'Neil had early international success in his new division, placing fifth at the German Open and defeating several top European players during the Fall 2007 European season.

After being named the alternate to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in the 60kg division, O'Neil moved back up to 66kg where he won his first Senior National title in April.
