Howes was a two-sport All-American in football and decathlon. The former world record holder for most receiving yards in a single football game (418 yard) played professionally in the Arena Football League.

Howes co-wrote the 2009 book, LinkedWorking: Generating Success on the World's Largest Professional Networking Website. The book is a guide to using the business oriented social networking site LinkedIn. He is also the author of The Ultimate Webinar Marketing Guide, which was published in 2012. In 2008, Howes founded a social media marketing consulting firm aimed at the sports industry. He also started Sports Executive Association, a monthly membership website for sports executives, and Inspired Marketing, which creates educational materials based on social media.
