Harvey was the top-ranked high school vaulter in the country in 1993 with a best of 17-1, but he was relatively little-known until he finished second at the 2000 U.S. Indoor championships. His true coming-out party was during the 2001 indoor season, when he pushed Lawrence Johnson to a then-American Record at the GMC Envoy USA Indoor Championships (clearing a PR 5.93m/19-5.5), then took the silver medal behind Johnson at the World Indoor Championships. A leg injury suffered at World Indoors slowed his training for the outdoor season in 2001, but Harvey hopes for a strong outdoor showing in 2002.
