Gillette is one of the top visually-impaired jumpers in the world, winning a silver medal at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games...He is the current world record holder in the F11 men's long jump...Gillette is the only totally blind athlete in the world to eclipse the 22-foot barrier in the long jump...The son of Rickey Simms and Verdina Gillette-Simms, he has one sister, Uvonne...Retina detachments in both eyes caused Gillette to go totally blind in 1992 at the age of eight...Studied Management Of Recreational Facilities And Services at East Carolina University...Earned a master's degree in business administration from University of Phoenix in 2012...Serves as an athlete mentor for USOC's Classroom Champions program...As an athlete, motivational speaker and singer/song writer, Lex exemplifies the phrase, "No need for sight when you have vision"... Hobbies include singing, playing the piano, writing, reading, traveling, and enjoying other sports...He's sang the national anthem at major sporting events.
