Megan Dovell was born in Framingham, Massachusetts on June 20, 1987. The native of Duluth, Georgia graduated from Kennesaw State University with a bachelor's degree in communications, concentrating in media studies, along with a minor in marketing. She was first introduced to the sport of skeleton in late 2012. She was meeting a (now former) strength and conditioning coach at Kennesaw State University through a mutual friend (Todd Hamer strength and conditioning from Robert Morris University.) She was initially going to meet him in regards to graduate assistant postions in the strength and conditioning departments. He mentioned noticing her strength and power (from hockey and powerlifting) and he knew Mike Dionne was holding a combine in the metro-Atlanta area. He asked her if she liked adrenaline sports and told her about the USBSF website. She took the combine not even knowing about skeleton. She was on the smaller stature size and he suggested she should go to a skeleton school and not bobsled. In December 2012, she went to a skeleton school, fell in love and made the commitment to the sport.
