Games…Scored a team-high 23 points versus Dominican Republic in Pan American Games bronze-medal match on Oct. 20, one day after recording 15 points against Cuba in the semifinal round…Played in 16 HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS: 2004 – Capped her amazing high school career by being named the Gatorade National High School Volleyball Player of the Year for the second-straight year…In winning the award for a second consecutive season, Barboza joins Marion Jones (1991-93), LeBron James (2002-03) and Candace Parker (2003-04) as one of only four high school athletes in any sport to win Gatorade National Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons. She is the first volleyball player to achieve the feat…This season, the 6-foot-1-inch outside hitter/middle blocker averaged 18.3 kills, 1.57 blocks and 2.0 aces per match for the Bruins, who were 25-7 and reached the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA semifinals…She hit an amazing .537 for the season, compiling 14 matches with an attack efficiency greater than .650 and four matches in which she hit better than .800…Her best effort of the season (.840) came in a loss against eventual state champion Mira Costa…Finished her high school career with 2,145 career kills, 349 blocks and 152 aces…Her lengthy resume includes 2004 High School Player of the Year by Volleyball Magazine, All-California Interscholastic Federation (Southern Section) Division I-AA co-MVP, and four-time first-team All-CIF recognition. 2003 – Became the first junior to be named Gatorade National High School Volleyball Player of the Year…Registered 550 kills, 46 blocks and 38 service aces, and was the only high school player to be invited to train with the U.S. National Team in preparation for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens…Also named first team All-California Interscholastic Federation (Southern Section), to the Los Angeles Times Girls Volleyball All-Star Team and a PrepVolleyball.com High School All-American. 2002 – Named National Sophomore of the Year by Student Sports magazine after leading Long Beach Wilson to a runner-up finish at the California state high school volleyball championships…Also named Player of the Year by the Los Angeles Times…Earned CIF I-AA Most Valuable Player honors in addition to first-team All-State and first-team All-Moore League…Wilson finished second at the CIF Southern Section championships. 2001 – Named National Freshman of the Year by Student Sports magazine after leading Long Beach Wilson to the CIF Southern Section championship.
PERSONAL: Born Cynthia Jane Barboza on Feb. 7, 1987, in Bellflower, Calif. …Parents are Robert and Jane Barboza…Also has a brother, David (18)…At age 18 Cynthia was the youngest member of the USA women’s national volleyball training team in 2004 while pursuing a spot on the Olympic roster…While English is her first spoken language, Spanish was her first written language.
