With the underlying goal of guiding athletes from national teams to Olympic success, the U.S. Olympic Committee’s sport psychology team takes a coach-driven, athlete-centered approach to preparing players for international competition. Exceptional mental skills are necessary for exceptional Olympic performance, and USOC psychologists work with the National Governing Bodies to help athletes best prepare for competition. The psychologists provide individual consultations in person, over the phone and through email. They also offer small-group meetings to foster team building, optimal performance outcomes and problem-solving skills.
These experts create practical educational materials for coaches and athletes, and also travel with teams to support them on the road. They emphasize goal setting and encourage athletes to take an aggressive approach to competitions while also staying in control.
