USOC Coach of the Year Program

Each year, National Governing Bodies (NGBs) are able to nominate one coach in each of five award categories: Developmental, Doc Counsilman Science and Technology, National, Paralympic, and Volunteer.

NGBs are eligible to nominate one coach in each category to be recognized as their coach of the year. An independent selection panel reviews all candidates and selects the national winners in each category. The USOC recognizes each NGB Coach of the Year with a unique award and all National Coaches of the Year are honored by the USOC at a ceremony in late Spring.  Check out the categories below:

Coach of the Year 

A National Coach of the Year nominee is a coach of an Elite Level Club, Collegiate, Pan-Am, World Championship or Olympic Games coach or the coach of an elite athlete who competes at the highest level of your sport. This award is based on the accomplishments of the coach for the previous year. The nominee must currently be coaching or within their first year of retirement.

 

A Developmental Coach of the Year nominee is coach of a youth club, high school or junior-level coach, or a coach directly responsible for coaching athletes to the junior and/or elite level. This award is based on the accomplishments of the coach for the previous year. The nominee must currently be coaching or within their first year of retirement.

The “Doc” Counsilman Award is for a coach that utilizes scientific techniques/equipment as an integral part of his/her coaching methods, or has created innovative ways to use sport science.  The “use of science in sport” includes, but is not limited to, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, technology, strength and conditioning, exercise physiology, etc.

A Paralympic Coach of the Year nominee is a coach of an Elite Level Club, Collegiate, Pan-Am, World Championship or Olympic Games coach or the coach of an elite athlete who competes at the highest level of your sport. This award is based on the accomplishments of the coach for the previous year. The nominee must currently be coaching or within their first year of retirement.

A Volunteer Coach of the Year nominee is a coach who does not receive payment in any form for their involvement in coaching at any level.  This award is based on the accomplishments of the coach for the previous year. The nominee must be actively coaching athletes or within their first year of retirement.
